Dog at Thanksgiving table

Thanksgiving Foods: What’s Safe and What’s Harmful for Dogs and Cats?

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family, and, of course, delicious food. While we gather around the table, it’s tempting to share the feast with our furry companions. However, not all Thanksgiving dishes are safe for pets. To keep your dog or cat healthy and happy, here’s a quick guide to what to avoid and what’s safe to share in moderation.

Foods to Avoid

Certain Thanksgiving staples can be harmful – or even toxic – to dogs and cats. Here’s a list to keep in mind:

1. Turkey Bones and Skin

   – Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or internal injuries, while fatty skin can lead to pancreatitis.

2. Stuffing and Gravy

   – Ingredients like onions, garlic, and excessive salt are toxic to pets.

3. Mashed Potatoes

   – Plain potatoes are fine, but added butter, cream, and garlic make this a no-go.

4. Cranberry Sauce

   – Sugar and artificial sweeteners like xylitol can harm your pet.

5. Desserts

   – Chocolate, raisins, and nutmeg (found in pumpkin pie) are dangerous to pets.

Foods You Can Share

Want to create a special Thanksgiving plate for your pet? Here are safe and nutritious options:

1. Plain Turkey

   – Offer a small amount of boneless, skinless, unseasoned turkey.

2. Green Beans

   – Serve plain, steamed green beans as a crunchy, healthy treat.

3. Sweet Potatoes

   – Provide plain, cooked sweet potatoes with no added sugar or spices.

4. Pumpkin

   – Plain, canned pumpkin (not pie filling) is great for digestion.

Tips for a Pet-Safe Thanksgiving

– Prepare a Special Plate: Set aside safe foods for your pet before seasoning or adding extras to your dishes.

– Keep an Eye on the Trash: Make sure food scraps are out of reach to prevent accidental snacking.

Thanksgiving is about sharing joy and love—just be mindful of what you share with your pets. With a little planning, you can include them in the festivities without compromising their health.
